The Division of Sport Fish Aquatic Education Program has scheduled two Salmon Celebrations for the Anchorage area.

On Friday, May 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., elementary school children from the Anchorage School District will be releasing silver salmon fry into Taku-Campbell Lake, on the corner of King Street and 76th Avenue. The fish are from eggs that the students collected in September, and raised in their classrooms.

On Friday, May 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., elementary school children will help release hatchery-raised silver salmon smolt into Campbell Creek, at Campbell Creek Park, on the corner of Lake Otis and Tudor.

Hands-on salmon-related activity booths and casting practice stations will also be set up for the students at each event. Over 3,000 elementary school students are expected to attend the Anchorage events. The events are also open to the public.

These activities are part of the Aquatic Education program, which helps increase awareness of salmon, and fosters a sense of stewardship toward this valuable natural resource. The events would not be possible without the volunteer assistance of Rabbit Creek Elementary 6th graders, King Career Center students, ADF&G staff, and other volunteers.

Similar Salmon Celebrations are also scheduled for Soldotna, Palmer, and Kodiak.
